Rooted in Nature
Blue Leaf’s outdoor space is a vibrant, living classroom where children move freely, connecting with nature, and experiencing the rhythms of the natural world. Our outdoor environment is intentionally cared for and deeply valued as an essential part of every child’s day.
“Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth.”
– Henry David Thoreau
Blue Leaf’s Theory on the Outdoors and Nature
We might leave home in the sunshine and arrive at school in the snow. One of the things we love about our location in The Foothills of the Rocky Mountains of Boulder, is our ever swinging weather patterns. Unless conditions are truly unsafe, we embrace the weather, bundling up, splashing in puddles, playing in snow, or soaking up the sun. Every kind of day has something wonderful to offer. Of course, we know there are times to head inside and get cozy. Otherwise, correct clothes and gear will weather most storms and heat waves, providing the opportunity for year-round outdoor learning.
A space where beauty, growth, and exploration come together, the yard is filled with mature shade trees, flowering plants, fruit trees, and vegetable gardens. Children climb, dig, gather, rest, and imagine under open skies and leafy canopies. They observe the changing seasons, tend to garden beds, and harvest fruit right from the trees. These daily, hands-on experiences deepen their understanding of life cycles, interdependence, and the gifts of the Earth.
We believe being outside builds resilience, curiosity, and a joy for learning. Inspired by Forest School principles, we celebrate all kinds of weather and believe children benefit from being in all elements of nature. Whether it’s puddle jumping, watching bees in the garden, or sharing a snack under a tree, the outdoors offers endless opportunities for learning and connection.
Teachers are intentional in how they support play outdoors, sometimes stepping back to let children lead, and other times joining in to model care for the environment or help navigate social dynamics. Just as indoors, the outdoor space is seen as a “third teacher,” rich with possibility and wonder.

Nature is an integral part of how children learn, explore, and connect at Blue Leaf School. Our outdoor environment is designed to spark curiosity, invite wonder, and support the physical, emotional, and social growth of each child. We believe that the rhythms of the natural world offer children a living curriculum.
Open-ended spaces encourage deep thinking, imaginative play, and spontaneous discovery. Whether tending to the garden, building with natural materials, watching the seasons shift, or simply lying in the grass, children are given time and space to truly know the world around them, and themselves within it.
Our outdoor space is thoughtfully prepared to reflect the values of Reggio Emilia and RIE® principles. We see children as capable and curious, and our role as educators is to observe, support, and step in only when needed. Safety and risk are balanced with care and trust, allowing children to test their ideas and bodies in developmentally appropriate ways.
Time outside is time learning. It’s where relationships deepen, confidence grows, and collaboration takes shape. From quiet observation and discoveries, to joyful movement, the outdoor environment holds endless opportunities for self-expression, resilience, and belonging.
We are proud to offer children a space where the natural world is accessible and valued. An Eco Friendly, Certified Wildlife Habitat, where they are invited to slow down, listen closely, and feel at home in their natural surroundings.

What initially drew us to Blue Leaf was the opportunity for our daughter to spend lots of time outside, even as an infant. We’ve come to find that the Blue Leaf experience is so much more than that…
